A Constant Battle
Does this mean I am voting Democrat? No. I don’t know. Maybe. I want to vote for whomever I think will lead this country best, whether they’re Democrat or Republican shouldn’t matter. I understand the whole liberal/conservative thing, and for the most part I would consider myself a conservative, but is it more important to have a president who is against abortion or has a good foreign policy? A president who is against same-sex marriage or who has a good economic plan? I feel many Christians vote Republican because they feel it is God’s party or something. I feel they look at one or two issues, like abortion and/or same-sex marriage, and decide based on those issues. Are those issues going to make our country a better place? Are they that important?
Really?
Take abortion for example. First, let me make this clear: I am completely and wholeheartedly against abortion. I think it’s a terrible thing. But to me, when it comes to electing a President, it’s a non issue. One, I don’t feel it will ever change. Even if a President is against abortion…it’s not going to change…not in America. And two, even if it did change, would that make America a better place? It’s still going to happen. It will happen underground in more dangerous situations and more people will die or get hurt. Is that really what we want? Just because it’s illegal doesn’t mean it goes away. Drugs are illegal too and last I heard they’re still around. I am comfortable knowing that I personally am against abortion; I always will be. Whether or not it is illegal in my country won’t change that, it won’t change my personal relationship with Christ, which, to me, is more important.
Speaking of change…I also feel many Christians or Christian organizations have a “we need to change the world” attitude, and to that extent I totally agree…we do. But are we doing it the right way? Jesus changed the world more than anybody who has ever lived and He never once picked up a picket sign. He never even got angry. What if we put down our picket signs, and put away our ‘us against them’ attitude and started do what Jesus did best: love? If we learned to love everybody and accept everybody I don’t know…maybe there would be change. Maybe. Just a thought…
But anyways…I’m off the point. I wanted to discuss politics. I’m not sure who I’ll vote for. I might even end up voting Republican, but not because I am told to. I want to look at the issues, all of them, and make an informed decision based on what’s best for this country, and even more specifically, what’s best for me and my family. I think everyone should do the same. We should at least know why we’re voting a certain way. And heck, if issues like abortion and same-sex marriage are the most important issues for you…then that’s what you should vote for. Even I can’t argue with that. I just have a different set of priorities and I don’t feel that voting Democrat is such a bad thing. I don’t think God feels that way either…but what do I know?

3 Responses to “Politics Schmolitics”Well said. Here’s to informed voters! Thanks for all the cool places to check out on base and off. We’ve added them to our ‘must do’ list. You and Steph should get stationed here
I agree well said. Although we must be diligent. Revelations says the Anti Christ will be a Muslim. And I believe Mr. Obama could fit the mold ! And our country keeps taking God out of everything, pretty soon Our God will stop blessing this country. I do know we need to keep our house in order and trust Jesus our Savior in all that we do.Hope your doing well. Miss you.

Hi, I’ve known a lot of christian folks who don’t feel compelled to vote republican. I think the common knowledge that if youre a christian you have to vote for the right needs to be dealt with a lot more scrutiny. The simplest example being that every candidate running now on both sides for president are professed christians. Regardless of religion which as it is expressed in the constitution ought to be explicitly separate from the state. I like to see candidates chosen that demonstrate they can make sound steps towards improving the country. Someone who can tackle the problems we’re dealing with in our country in helping repair the economy, admitting global warming is a legitimate threat, making the right decisions about Iraq and so forth. If you make these decisions purely through the lens of religion I think you’ll encounter all kinds of problems.
As to what uncle rick said and I know he’s joking some of course. But I’d have to see the passage in revelations that says the antichrist is a muslim. In fact, Muslims believe Jesus was one of the prophets of God who’s message they take to be really sacred. The difference is they don’t believe Jesus is part of the christian idea of trinity in other words Jesus wasn’t a deity himself, he was just a messenger of God’s teachings. And the fact Obama has an arabic name and is black doesn’t make him a muslim by appearance. He’s made it clear a number of times that he’s a christian. You can visit his website if you want more information on it. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/faith/
Secondly, I think its a pretty dangerous belief that the devil exists in people one that breeds contempt more than anything.
I’d personally like to see a secular humanist run for president, unfortunately none are in the race.
The point on love and acceptance is a good one but there are limits to it. You can certainly love or at least have compassion for people in your life even those you disagree with. But for those who are clearly committing wrong acts in the world and inflicting harm on people there surely has to be someone stepping in to prevent them from doing it. How you do it is a more difficult question and depends a lot on the situation your facing too. But maybe intervention is itself an act of love. How far can you take it? Should we love suicide bombers? And if so how? Do you love the suicide bomber after you’ve diffused his vest pack gave him a good slap and put him in restraints? How do you love those who are bringing destruction into the world? Is it more that you feel compassion for their suffering or accept them in terms that they know not what they do? It’s a difficult question…Just some more things to think about.
