I’m here in Kingston, Jamaica. I have been for the last three days. No luck yet finding the bobsled team, nor Doug E. Fresh. Is that guy even Jamaican?
I have had the chance to see the streets and meet a ton of people. Last night the hotel here had a managers banquet and invited each guest down poolside for some free drinks, food and music. All were scrumptious.
The music was actually fantastic. It was a girl name Kai Wakeling and an older guy on a Jamaican drum and they played fantastic, relaxing reggae music. They didn’t have any CDs, but they pointed a few of us to their MySpace page. Check it out if you get a chance. The music (only two songs on their page) is great.
Today I had the chance to go to another orphanage. One of the best parts of these trips is the opportunity to visit orphanages and see people of the local community, especially kids like today. We were a bit surprised because the group of kids was much younger than we expected. I think the oldest was probably four and the rest were babies in diapers. We got to hold them and play with them. It was great, but they were hard to put down. Not entirely because we didn’t want to; more so because they didn’t want to let us. Still, it was a great time.
Yesterday I spent the entire day with the Air Force Academy Band Blue Steel. They are still roaming the Caribbean islands, playing shows and making appearances in the local communities. Yesterday they performed on a popular TV Morning Show here in Jamaica called Smile Jamaica. They then went to a boys school that is popular for their music program, and then a private girls school which also has a big music program. It was a busy day for them, three appearances/shows, but it was a blast and I got it all on tape. I produced a story as well. Check it out below.
I also have a number of photos, but I can’t upload them. If I get around to it I’ll post them when I get back…this weekend!
