Last night was a very unsettling evening. I should have known it was going to be a bad night when I visited different blockbusters around town looking for The Never Ending Story with no luck. Good news is I finally found it under a few different movies on a shelf at the local grocery store. Bad news is I was never able to watch it.
At about 9pm last night I was hanging out with Stephanie in her room when her Dad came in and said her mom, brother and two little sisters had been in a bad accident and he had to leave. He explained the accident was close by and that he would call us as soon as he knew something. After five minutes or so, Stephanie couldn’t wait anymore and decided to call him. She ended up on the phone with her brother who explained that her Mom and him were ok, but the two girls were hurt pretty bad. What he was saying was barely audible over the screams we heard in the background. Both of her little sisters were being strapped down and airlifted to a local hospital.
Another phone call about twenty minutes later from her Dad explained that the car was stopped at a red light when a drunk driver slammed into them going 50 MPH or more. Grace, 9 years old, and Vic, 12 years old were the two girls in the back and both of them suffered injuries. Grace slammed her head against something and fractured her temporal bone which caused bleeding from the ear and bruising on the brain. She initially went unconscious but then woke up scared and began screaming. Vic, the 12 year old tougher than me, held her left eye and jaw with one hand, which had both been smashed and were caved inward while consoling and trying to calm her sister down until the ambulance could come.
They were both airlifted to the hospital where they were really scared about Grace who the doctors said kept slipping in and out of consciousness and had to be incubated so she could breath. They scanned her brain and found that there was no bleeding in the brain, so she would hopefully be ok. As of today, she is a lot better and besides being drugged up and wanting to sleep is fine. Her sister on the other hand didn’t suffer any brain injuries but as I explained before had major injuries to her face. Basically one cheek bone sticks out, the other in. She is going to have plastic surgery tomorrow and will have metal screws and plates in her face forever.
Why am I explaining all the horrible details?? So hopefully you will read this and realize how dumb and dangerous drinking and driving can be. These two little girls were on their way home from church on a Sunday night when some dumb drunk got behind the wheel and drove his Ford F-150 Pickup Truck into the back of their little car, shoving the trunk into the backseat and changing the girls lives forever.
After all this however, I do have to say God blessed the family last night. By the looks of it, it could have been much worse. Fortunately they both will live, and the drunk driver, who had the courage to walk up to the passenger window afterwards and tell Stephanie’s little brother that they should have gone, was arrested and is being charged appropriately. They both will still face a lot of challenges in the next couple weeks so please pray for them and the family. And please, please, please don’t drive drunk. Even a little drunk is too drunk to drive. You don’t want to be the one who ruins somebody’s life.
